THE ARTPIECES

What will you see during the visit?

Considering the largest private historic gardens in Madrid, the exterior of the Palacio de Liria is an oasis of serenity where Spanish history and avant-garde European landscape converge. This monumental space has been shaped over the centuries by the vision of the Dukes of Alba and the mastery of such important figures as Ventura Rodriguez And the French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier.

The complex is divided into two spaces with complementary artistic identities:

  • The English Garden (Main Facade): English-inspired and designed in the 19th century, this garden seeks to recreate the spontaneity of nature in the heart of the urban center. Its sinuous paths include centuries-old examples of magnolia trees, cedars from Lebanon, chestnut trees and yews, which surround the neoclassical façade of Ventura Rodríguez in an atmosphere of seclusion and privacy.
  • The French Garden (Back Facade): Redesigned in 1916 by the famous French gardener Forestier, this sector regains the elegance of classicism. Its design is structured around perfectly symmetrical flower beds and an emblematic central fountain, attributed to Ventura Rodríguez himself, recreating the splendour of French-style gardens that dialogue harmoniously with the architecture of the palace.

Walking through these gardens is also discovering unique corners of the Casa de Alba family memory. Today, thanks to the conservation work of the Casa de Alba Foundation, these gardens open their doors to share with the public a botanical and sculptural heritage that has remained a secret kept in the heart of Madrid for more than two centuries.
